The fatal Chicago Police shooting of Laquan McDonald made national headlines after he was shot 16 times while walking down the street with a knife. When police squad car video and audio was released, public outrage reached a boiling point in Chicago. Some took to the streets to protest, but for the most part, the expressions of anger were non-violent with just a few exceptions. One such exception was Jabari Dean of Chicago, who was charged and arrested for transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. Such a crime carries up to five years in prison as a maximum sentence.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago is the governmental office who is in charge of prosecuting federal criminal cases. According to their lawyers, the defendant posted on a social media website that he was going to execute approximately 16 students and staff members, as well as any white police officers he encountered. This was apparently intended as retaliation for the shooting of Laquan McDonald, with one murder for every time he had been shot. The FBI said that the gun violence was supposed to take place on the quad of the University of Chicago precisely at 10 a.m. As a result the campus was closed once the school was notified of the threat.
