(Driver’s License) Gone in 60 Seconds!

CarA Nineteen year old boy that apparently thought he was invincible, allegedly made the ill-fated decision to try his luck against Oklahoma’s Law Enforcement community, and now is facing charges of Reckless Driving, and Felony Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer. Although this is alleged to have happened in Oklahoma, if it had occurred in Chicago or anywhere else in Illinois, the charges would likely have been exactly the same, along with a Class A misdemeanor for going 35 or more miles over the posted limit.

At first, he wasn’t too bad off, clocked by an OK State Highway Patrol officer at a mere 84 miles per hour, but when the police lights went on, this young man really hit the gas on his souped-up Mustang, by reaching speeds of 176 miles per hour, and then the mind-boggling speed of 208 miles per hour. He is alleged to have extinguished his headlights and brake lights (which in Illinois would likely have resulted in yet another moving violation) in an effort to elude the pursuing patrol officer. Ultimately, a County Sheriff’s officer was able to intercept him, where he then gave up without a struggle.

At 208 miles per hour, the young man was hurtling forward at the ridiculous rate of 269.28 feet per second, or almost the entire length of a football field every second! In Illinois, he would be facing a potential jail sentence of one to three years in a penitentiary, or up to 30 months of probation, or conditional discharge, for the felony fleeing and eluding charge. A jail sentence of up to 6 months could be a condition of any such probation or conditional discharge. If convicted of the felony, his driving privileges would be revoked by our Secretary of State for a minimum of 12 months, and could only be reinstated following an administrative hearing.
