Matthew J. Hickey

Matthew Hickey is a Senior Associate Attorney at Mitchell S. Sexner & Associates LLC and a highly skilled litigator with more than 20 years of experience in both criminal and traffic matters. Over the course of his remarkable career, he has handled a wide variety of cases ranging from traffic violations and DUIs to the most serious of criminal offenses including reckless homicide and murder charges.

A lifelong Chicago-area native, Mr. Hickey graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in Economics in 1993 and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1996 from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. During his third year of law school at John Marshall, he was awarded a coveted prosecutor’s position with the City of Chicago Corporation Council’s office.

As a young prosecutor for the City of Chicago, Matt learned the inner workings of the Cook County criminal system allowing him to sharpen his legal skills before turning his considerable talents towards defending those accused of criminal offenses. He practices not only in Cook County, but in most of Northeastern Illinois including the counties of Lake, Kane, DuPage, Will and McHenry.

Attorney Hickey is a successful litigator who has successfully handled literally thousands of misdemeanor and felony matters, often by directly challenging the Constitutionality of the evidence and has an above 90% win record for cases he’s taken to trial. Matt has also effectively argued to avoid imprisonment in some of the most serious gun and sex offenses in Illinois, allowing his clients a second chance at life.

Concentrating his considerable legal talents in the areas of criminal and traffic law, Mr. Hickey seeks to bring justice and fairness to what may often seem to some as an unjust or unfair judicial system. Attorney Hickey understands that the true purpose of any court proceeding is to help defendants move towards a more productive life, not merely to punish. He has successfully shepherded clients through the Restorative Justice Community Court, an innovative and intensive alternative program for young adults charged with non-violent offenses, eventually getting these cases dismissed and expunged.
