Chicago Hospitals with High Injury Rates Will Lose Millions

It was recently announced that the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have decided to penalize certain hospitals that carry high rates of infection and injuries. As a result of this penalty, certain hospitals may lose 1% of their Medicare reimbursements, which may cost these facilities an estimated twelve million dollars.  The Illinois hospitals that face being penalized include:

Carle Foundation

Decatur Memorial

Edward Hospital

Franciscan St. James Health

Little Company of Mary

Louis A. Weiss Memorial

MacNeal Hopsital

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center

Midwestern Regional

Mt. Sinai Medical

Northwest Community

Northwestern Lake Forest

Northwestern Memorial

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center

OSF St. Francis Medical Center

Palos Community

Passavant Area

Provident Hospital of Chicago

Richland Memorial Hospital

St. Bernard

St. Elizabeth’s

St. Mary’s Hospital

Vista Medical Center East

The determination was based upon a scoring system and certain hospitals were excluded from the scoring. Excluded hospitals included critical access, long-term care, psychiatric, and rehabilitation hospitals.  Some cancer facilities and children’s hospitals were also excluded.

When people go to a hospital for treatment or medical care, they certainly never expect that while there they may contract another disease, infection, or even suffer a new injury. But, this potential exists every time one enters such a facility.  Doctors, nurses, and medical personnel are supposed to keep patients safe from such dangers and maintain a clean and healthy environment. If you or a loved one has been injured in any way as a result of a hospital or ER room visit, medical malpractice may have occurred.
